'A' team players impress
The Daily News - 18 August 1999

The first of two one-day practice cricket matches played by the Sri Lanka pool cricketers in preparation for the Aiwa Cup one-day triangular against Australia and India ended in a no-result at the R. Premadasa Stadium with rain curtailing play yesterday.

Mahela Jayawardene's XI hit up an impressive total of 276 for 8 off 50 overs and had Sanath Jayasuriya's XI struggling at 175 for 6 in the 36th over when rain brought a premature end to the game.

Most notable were the performances of the Sri Lanka 'A' team players who had returned from England. Opening bat Avishka Gunawardana made the top score of the match with a hard-hit 57 off 66 balls with seven fours and Indika de Saram scored 31. It was followed by Marvan Atapattu's knock of 41 off 63 balls with two fours and Chaminda Vaas' rapid 36 off 33 balls with 2 fours for Jayewardene's XI.

Another 'A' team player Nimesh Perera took 3 for 49 with his leg-spin with Jayasuriya also chipping in with three wickets.

In Jayasuriya XI's reply, Jayasuriya slammed 31 off 34 balls with one six and three fours and Chandika Hathurusingha scored 44 off 57 balls with five fours.

Another one-day practice game will be played at the same venue today.
