Schoolboys to benefit from Cricket Foundation scholarships
The Daily News - 21 August 1999

The Sri Lanka Cricket Foundation awarded six cricketing scholarships to very talented schoolboy cricketers from the outstations.

These schoolboys were selected from the district coaching clinics conducted by Anura Tennekoon through the SLCF.

Each scholarship awardee is entitled to Rs. 20,000 worth of cricket equipment and clothing each year. They will also be brought to Colombo once a month where specialised coaching and cricketing know-how will be imparted to them by reputed Sri Lankan cricketers.

The SLCF will monitor the physical fitness levels of these awardees and also provide food and vitamin supplements to them in order to build them up for the future demands of the game.

Of the six awardees in 1997-98 Chamara Silva has been selected to the one-day squad for Sri Lanka in the Aiwa Cup tri-nation series against Australia and India, and Malinga Bandara was chosen to play in the Test against New Zealand in 1998.

The schoolboys who received scholarships are: M.A.M. Aslam (Ratnapura district), P.S. Aranagalla (Gampaha district), A.B. Wegodapola (Kurunegala district), S.P. Arthanayake (Chilaw district), R.B. Wijesinghe (Kandy district) and N. Parnavithana (Kegalle district).
