Barbados: Title slips away The Barbados Nation - 29 August 1999 Georgetown - Barbados' hopes of a regional cricket treble appear doomed. The National Under-15 side lost for the second time in three matches in the West Indies Under-15 cricket championship when defending champions Guyana scored an exciting 14-run victory at the Diamond Community Centre ground yesterday. Set 144 for victory, after the game was reduced to 40 overs because of three stoppages for rain, Barbados succumbed for 129 in 37.4 overs. Barbados were seeking their third title after winning the regional first class tournament for the Busta Cup, and the Nortel Under-19 three-day title. Guyana's victory was engineered by a five-wicket haul from off-spinner Ravi Sarwan and outstanding wicket-keeping by Delbert Hicks. Sarwan, brother of Guyana and West Indies 'A' team player Ramnaresh Sarwan, flighted his off-spinners cleverly to grab five for 21 as Barbados threatened, at one stage, to prevent Guyana from maintaining their 100 per cent record in the competition. The hosts had previously defeated the Leeward Islands and Jamaica at Bourda. After losing the wicket of opener Emilike Edghill for four, caught and bowled by fast medium bowler Melroy Barclay, Bruce Chandler (25) and Kirk Edwards (24) added 37 for the second wicket. Chandler decided to carry the attack to the Guyanese bowlers, clouting Sarwan and Roopnarine Ramgobin for sixes over long-off and mid-wicket, respectively, and also lashing two fours. In trying to hit Sarwan for his third six, Chandler succeeded only in finding Barclay at long-off to end his 43-ball innings. Edwards played sensibly and added a further 21 with Kirk Gibson (eight) and 20 with his captain Derek Bishop (12) before the right-hander himself departed with his side on 97 for five in the 28th over, caught by captain Suruj Paltoo off Sarwan. Thereafter, Barbados suffered a slump, slipping from 97 for five to 104 for nine as Sarwan and leg-spinner Rakesh Goberdan took charge. Corey Edwards and last man Kenroy Williams tried hard but the effort proved beyond their capabilities when Paltoo, returning for his final over, rocked back the middle stump of Williams. Earlier, Guyana, batting in between three showers, were given a start of 27 from Rawlston Tappin and Latchman Rohit. The two were also aided by some wayward bowling from fast medium bowler Forde. Guyana will now oppose Trinidad and Tobago at Uitvlugt tomorrow while Barbados play Jamaica at Everest. Scores: Guyana 143 in 34. 3 overs (Delbert Hicks 23, Devon Ramnauth 16, Rawlston Tappin 14, Badyn Fudadin 13; Corey Edwards 3-28, Kirk Gibson 2-34, Emelike Edghill 2-35, Derek Bishop 1-15, Jamal Forde 1-28); Barbados 129 in 37.4 overs (Bruce Chandler 25, Kirk Edwards 24, Corey Edwards 19 not out, Derek Bishop 12; Ravi Sarwan 5-23, Rakesh Goberdan 2-30, Melroy Barclay 1/11, Saiud Drepaul 1-11, Suruj Paltoo 1-24).
