Wasim avoids media as team returns Mohammad Yaqoob - 2 December 1999
Lahore, Dec 1: Pakistan captain Wasim Akram refused to talk to the media as his team returned from Down Under after suffering a white-wash in the three-Test series. Akram, whose own performance remained below-par, disappointed a large number of mediamen who had assembled to seek his views following Pakistan's embarrassing defeat in Australia. Akram's team suffered defeat despite his claims that Pakistan would win the Test series. Pakistan manager, Yawar Saeed, however, tackled the media and faced a barrage of questions starting from team's pathetic performance to chucking row surrounding Shoaib Akhtar. Yawar Saeed observed that the major difference between the two sides was the approach of the fast bowlers. "Pakistani bowlers bowled wide off the stumps whereas the Australians bowled at length. Pakistan could score only three centuries during the series which showed inconsistency of Pakistani batsmen," he observed. He accepted that the Australians played more professionally and were stronger than Pakistanis in all departments of the game. Except vice-captain Moin Khan and off-spinner Saqlain Mushtaq, all other members of the team arrived. Moin Khan will return on Saturday while Saqlain Mushtaq will reach on Thursday. The Pakistan team coach Richard Pybus also arrived with the team. The following cricketers returned from Australia: Wasim Akram, Saeed Anwar, Wajahatullah Wasti, IjazAhmad, Mohammed Wasim, Ghulam Ali, Yousuf Youhana, Inzamam-ul-Haq, Abdul Razzaq, Azhar Mahmood, Mohammad Akram, Mushtaq Ahmad, Waqar Younis, Shoaib Akhtar © Dawn
