West Indies Domestic: Hoyte hits 161 off Schools South 6 December 1999
Ricky Hoyte was in the limelight on the opening day of the final series of matches in the Courts/Suzuki Division 1 competition. Leading ICB Empire for the first time, the left-hander stroked a masterful 161 as his side reached 347 for six against CHIC Schools South yesterday. Hoyte hit 17 fours and four sixes en route to his career-best score, while adding 190 for the fifth wicket with Marlon Blaggrove, who had nine fours and two sixes in 83 not out. There was also a century for veteran Rommel Brathwaite. He slammed 100 not out as Cable & Wireless BET rattled up 273 for three against BCL at Wildey. Brathwaite received support from Floyd Reifer who made 91 in a second- wicket stand of 163. Bowlers generally held sway in the other matches. Banks reached 44 for four in reply to Big ‘B’ Spartan’s 116 at Queen’s Park; champions Stansfeld Scott Police were 35 for one at home after shooting out ESA Field Pickwick for 132, and United Carlton were 56 for five and in sight of first innings after Cockspur Wanderers fell for 72. Teenaged leg-spinner Ryan Layne claimed seven for 50 as Mount Gay Maple were bowled out for 119. CHIC Schools North were 30 without loss in reply. At Bayfield, openers Jason Jordan (39) and Patrick Browne (43) posted 83 for the first wicket but BNB St. Catherine only managed 189 for nine declared. Left with one over to bat, YMPC did not face a ball as the umpires offered them light. It was a great day for The St. Michael School who won the Goddard’s Schools’ championship, their first cricket title. The final, played at St. James Secondary, ended in a draw but St. Michael’s won on first innings points. St. Michael’s made 135 in their innings in reply to Deighton Griffith’s 114. Batting again Deighton Griffith reached 65 for three. St. Michael’s started the day at 14 for two and slid to 14 for four before a 99-run stand between Jamal Jordan (52) and Simon Clarke (36). Barbados Under-19 pacer Marlon Franklyn, took five for 48 and leg-spinner Williams four for 31. In the intermediate, Carib Conrad Hunte Sports Club qualified for the final after they gained first innings points against Barbados Defence Force at Shorey Village. Conrad Hunte made 158 in reply to the BDF’s paltry first innings total of 67. The BDF were 96 for four in the second innings when the match was called off.
