Put in to bat, Uttar Pradesh failed to capitalise on an opening partnership of 81 runs and dawled along to score 172 for five off 90 overs at close of play on the first day of their Central Zone Vijay Merchant Trophy (under-16) match against Rajasthan at Bhilwara on Friday.

Openers Ashraf Ali (42) and SK Shukla (56) batted for 29.5 overs but the batsmen who followed struggled for runs chiefly against P Singh and P Choudhury who took two wickets each.
