Right stuff spelt out Haydn Gill - 19 December 1999
The West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) has set down strict qualifications for the posts of senior team manager and coach. The qualifications and experience are outlined in advertisements in the Sunday Sun today, several months after the WICB announced its intention to advertise for the posts.
The three-year contracts of manager Clive Lloyd and the late coach Malcolm Marshall expired in late October. In early November, the board appointed Lloyd and coach Sir Vivian Richards until the end of the current tour of New Zealand.
Among the requirements for the job of manager are formal qualifications in sports administration or other tertiary education.
A minimum of five years’ practical experience in management is also needed.
The coach must be a holder of an advanced coaching certificate and certification or training in sports psychology.
The person should also have a minimum of three years’ practical experience in coaching at Test or first-class level.
Richards, a former West Indies captain who has gained favourable feedback from team members in New Zealand, is not known to have extensively coached any Test or first-class team since his retirement from international cricket in 1991.
His only previous stint as coach of an international team was during the World Cup in June when Marshall was hospitalised. And that lasted one match.
The coach is to join the regional selection panel – a reversal of the current position – and chair selection committee meetings while on overseas tours.
According to the advertisement, the purpose of the coach is “to assist in the development of the West Indies team and to develop technical strategies required for moulding the team into a winning combination”.
The manager “will be required to provide leadership and to co-ordinate the activities of the team so as to facilitate motivation, high-quality performance and an environment which is conducive to the welfare and overall success of the team, within the guidelines of the policies and objectives of the WICB”.
The WICB said the job of manager was a “challenging” one, which included several administrative duties.
They include the preparation of budgets for each tour for consideration of the board and ensure that expenses are maintained within the allocated budget.
He is to manage tour accounts and ensure that all records are kept and reports provided in a timely manner.
The manager must establish and maintain working relationships with third parties such as sponsors, the media and other agencies appointed by the board to carry out promotional and public relations activities.
Applications for both posts should reach WICB’s chief executive officer by January 14, 2000.
It is expected that the appointments will be made in time for Zimbabwe’s tour to the Caribbean starting in March.
