20 December 1999

Karachi, Dec 19: Anfords Cricket Club and Karachi Electric Supply Corporation (KESC) won their matches in the 14th Karachi Gymkhana Ramazan Festival at the Karachi Gymkhana here on Sunday.

In the morning, Anford Club shocked an experienced Aftab Memorial club by six wickets while in the afternoon fixture, KESC prevailed over A.O. Cricket Club by 77 runs.

Anfords club displayed a good all-round performance to secure maximum points. Fielding first, they dismissed Aftab Memorial for 148 in 24.1 overs who reached the score through some gutsy batting by Jawad Ali.

Jawwad scored 60 with the aid of four boundaries. The only other batsman to assist Jawwad was Imran Umer who scored 30. The two featured in a 75-run fourth wicket stand.

For Anfords, wickets were evenly shared between Iftikhar Ali (two for 12), Farjam Ali (two for 31) and Tariq Haroon (two for 33).

Anfords, in their turn at the wicket, achieved victory with 20 balls and six wickets to spare. Mansoor Baig slammed an unbeaten 67 with the aid of three fours and a six. Zahid Ghori contributed 37. The two added 86 runs for the third wicket.

Mansoor Baig was later adjudged Man-of-the-Match.

A swashbuckling undefeated century by Arif Mahmood propelled KESC to a thumping 77-run victory over AOCC in the afternoon.

Arif Mahmood belted 10 fours and seven sixes in his 45-ball 100 as KESC went on a run scoring spree and collected 245 for three in 25 overs.

Arif Mahmood added 111 runs for the second wicket with Zafar Ali who chipped in with a useful 68 that included eight hits to the fence. Opener Kamil Khan also mauled the AOCC bowlers by hammering 53 with seven fours and a six.

AOCC never threatened KESC and finished at 168 for eight - thanks largely to a fine 70 by opener Fahad Khan whose innings included 11 boundaries and a six.

Wasim Naeem (two for 20), Jaffar Qureshi (two for 22) and Tahir Khan (two for 31) shared wickets.

Arif Mahmood was adjudged Man-of-the-Match.
