Comfortable victories in Vinoo Mankad Trophy
Partab Ramchand - 28 December 1999

Comfortable victories were the order of the day in the Vinoo Mankad (under-16) Trophy matches in Calcutta on Monday.

Madhya Pradesh scored a convincing six wicket victory over Haryana. Put in to bat, Haryana were restricted to 156 for eight in 24 overs. They could not consolidate after skipper B Balla (28) and Gaurav Gupta (38) had put on 56 runs for the second wicket. Shrivastava played a stellar role in containing Haryana by capturing five wickets for 16 runs off five overs. MP in reply lost two wickets for 49 but were put on the road to victory by a third wicket partnership of 77 runs between VS Tomar (51 with five fours and two sixes) and Akash Singh (70 with ten fours and two sixes).

A first wicket partnership of 129 runs Harsh Banora and Waseem Shahnawaz highlighted Jammu & Kashmir's eight wicket victory over Daman & Diu. Put in to bat, Daman & Diu scored 176 for nine in 24 overs. They lost four wickets for 45 runs before skipper Savio Remedis (34 with three fours and a six) and Sohib Shiligat (40 with nine fours) added 73 runs for the fifth wicket. Monish Tandel then contributed a valuable 32 with six fours and a six. J & K with the openers in good form reached their target in 22 overs. While Shahnawaz made 66 with the help of eight fours and a six, Banora remained unbeaten with 52 with seven hits to the fence. Banora and Manish Sharma (34 not out with five fours and two sixes) added 46 runs for the unbroken third wicket.

Uttar Pradesh shrugged off a bad start to complete a 48 run win over Maharashtra. Winning the toss, UP lost three wickets for 19 and half the side for 68. But they recovered through a sixth wicket stand of 77 runs between Masan Sameer Khan (45 with four fours and three sixes) and Javed Chowdhury (32 not out with three fours and a six). Dilip Yadav then bolstered the late order with a bright 27 inclusive of three fours and two sixes. Maharashtra made a poor start, never recovered and were shot out for 121 in 22 overs.

Bengal defeated Tamil Nadu by 42 runs. Winning the toss, Bengal were all out for 205 in 25 overs. Opener SJ Hazra (49 with seven fours) and Soumyajit Das (31) put on 62 runs for the second wicket. Hazra and S Motira (33) then condolidated by adding 65 runs for the third wicket. Velmurugan was the most successful bowler with four for 25 off five overs. Tamil Nadu lost wickets at regular intervals and were never really in the hunt and were dismissed for 163 in 23 overs. Mustafi was the pick of the bowlers taking four for 29 from four overs.
