Dawn Pakistan Cricket Board advisory panel meets tomorrow
Farhana Ayaz - 29 December 1999

Islamabad, Dec 28: The recently formed five-member Pakistan Cricket Board Advisory Panel is scheduled to hold its first formal meeting at the Gadhafi Stadium on Dec 30 at 11.00 am.

PCB Ad hoc Committee Chairman Lt-Gen Tauqir Zia will preside over the meeting.

The agenda includes almost every major cricketing affair of the country. The five-member Advisory Panel includes Javed Miandad, Ramiz Hasan Raja, Nasim-ul-Ghani, Yawar Saeed and Wasim Azhar.

The agenda includes the issue of Shoaib Akhtar's chucking controversy.

Talking to Dawnon Tuesday, Lt. Gen. Zia said that although there has been no response to our letter to ICC with request to delay of the meeting, but Pakistan was ready to confront the issue.

The chairman said that in case the ICC Committee could not get Imran Khan, who is presently in Mexico, then Intikhab Alam has been nominated to represent Pakistan. Both, Intikhab and Shoaib Akhtar will be in Australia during that time.

The chairman said that both Imran Khan and Intikhab Alam have seen the video footage sent by the ICC Committee and they are fully aware of the arguments.

The PCB chief, however, hoped that since only the bouncer and the faster delivery of Shoaib Akhtar have been questioned by the ICC Committee, therefore, there are more chances that Pakistan will not have any problem keeping their star strike bowler for the Australian tour. Moreover, since it is a one-day therefore the question of no-balls on bouncer is also applicable, the chief said.

Elaborating his views on the first formal Advisory Panel meeting, the chairman said that it would be aimed at taking into confidence members of the panel but the broadbased agenda will take into account every major cricketing affair.

The PCB chief also outlined the agenda point which would look at the future of national senior and junior selection committee. It was stated that discussion will be made whether to constitute selection committees whose work will be double checked by the Advisory Panel or give the responsibility to the latter.

At the end of the meeting tasks will be given to the members who would later submit their recommendations. The PCB ad hoc committee chief maintained that after evolving strategies his aim would be to implement the plans in soul and spirit unlike what has been happening in the past.

It was stated that the match-fixing controversy will be discussed in depth during the Advisory Panel meeting, although the chairman himself has not yet received the one-man Judicial Commission's investigative report.

Measures to clear the rot in cricket associationsthroughout the country following January 18 deadline for submission of Scrutiny Committee report, elections of associations, revamping of domestic cricket setup, legal advisor on PCB constitutional guidelines etc, are part of the agenda.

Moreover, service rules for employees of PCB will be formulated in order to curb the practice of change in the setup with change at the top, he said.

Decision on what disciplinary action is to be taken against speedster Waqar Younis, who lambasted Wasim Akram during a press conference will also be taken during the meeting.

LIGHTS AT KARACHI/ RAWALPINDI: Decision on installation of floodlights at National Stadium, Karachi and Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium will be taken on a priority basis to equip these venues for holding day/night matches.

Presentations by two companies, Phillips and Seimens, will be made for installation at National Stadium Karachi during the next two days to the PCB chief. The final decision will be taken during the Advisory Panel meeting, it was stated.
