Stephen Waugh appointed Test captain
Australian Cricket Board - 12 February 1999
The Australian Cricket Board Chairman, Denis Rogers, today announced the Australian Cricket Team's leadership for the Coca-Cola 1999 Tour of the West Indies.
The team will be led by Stephen Waugh (Captain) and Shane Warne (Vice-captain).
"The Board congratulates Stephen Waugh on his selection as the 40th Australian cricket captain," Mr Rogers said.
Stephen Waugh made his Test debut in December 1985 against India in Melbourne and has played 111 Tests to this point, second only by an Australian behind Allan Border's world record of 156 Tests.
He currently sits fourth on the all time list of Australian run scorers, behind Border, Mark Taylor and David Boon.
At a media conference in Melbourne today to confirm his appointment, Waugh said he had received his highest honour in the game.
"I am honoured to get this position and I hope I can continue the successful formula we have had in place under Allan Border and then Mark Taylor."
