Bajans dominate Busta averages Haydn Gill - 17 February 1999 Barbados' overwhelming superiority in the 1999 Busta Cup has been reflected in several of their players dominating the leading averages after the preliminary round of competition. After winning four of five matches, they can boast of the top run-scorer, the leading wicket-taker, the batsman and bowler with the best averages, the batsman with the highest individual score, the bowler with the best innings haul, and the wicket-keeper with the most dismissals. Opening batsman Sherwin Campbell leads all run-scorers, his 470 runs also giving him the highest average of 67.14. The 28-year-old Campbell, seeking a recall for the West Indies team, has the tournament's highest score, an unbeaten 169 against the Leeward Islands. His two centuries were among eight in the preliminaries. Experienced left-arm spinner Winston Reid is far and away the highest wicket-taker, his 38 scalps (ave. 14.68) falling just under Rajindra Dhanraj's five-match record of 40 wickets in 1996. Reid, 36, achieved the best innings' figures of eight for 77 in the same match in which Campbell hit the tournament's best score. He was also the only bowler to capture five or more wickets in an innings on three occasions. Another Barbadian, seamer Hendy Bryan, topped the bowling averages. Injury limited him to two matches in which he took 11 wickets at 11.00 runs apiece. The list of top Barbadians is completed by wicket-keeper Courtney Browne, whose 24 dismissals include a record nine stumpings. Adrian Griffith and Roland Holder join Campbell among seven batsmen with an average of more than 40. The left-handed Griffith scored 311 runs (ave. 44.42), while skipper Holder made 289 runs (ave. 41.28). The other batsmen in that group are Trinidad and Tobago's Lincoln Roberts (255 runs, ave. 51.00), Leeward Islands' Dave Joseph (401 runs, ave. 50.12), Jamaica's Jimmy Adams (337 runs, ave. 48.14) and Trinidad and Tobago's Denis Rampersad (310 runs, ave. 44.28). Jamaica off-spinner Nehemiah Perry is the second highest wicket-taker with 24 victims (ave. 17.41), while Windward Islands left-arm spinner Roy Marshall, who took 21 wickets, was second in the averages with 14.38. The fast bowler with the most wickets was Guyana's Colin Stuart, whose 20 wickets came at 19.10 runs apiece.
