Dawn Gavaskar turns down Vajpayee's invitation

CALCUTTA, Feb 19: India's all-time great Sunil Gavaskar has turned out an invitation from his country's prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee to accompany him to Pakistan on bus on Saturday.

The invitation was extended by the Indian prime minister on Thursday but Gavaskar tendered his apology by saying he was committed with WorldTel for whom he commentating on television.

``I am very grateful and feel honoured to be invited by the Prime Minister on a trip to Pakistan but I am occupied with my assignment on television,'' Gavaskar said.

Gavaskar, his country's leading run-getter and world record holder for the highest number of centuries, was the only sportsman invited for the historic trip by the Indian premier.

The first bus from New Delhi departs for Lahore on Saturday.
