Kent Veterans on five-match tour to Sri Lanka
The Daily News - 12 February 1999

Following closely on the heels of the Kent under-17 cricketers are the Kent Veterans who arrive on Sunday for a five-match tour of Sri Lanka.

The 15-member team are aged over 50 and the county they represent participate in the National 50 plus county championship which is competed for between 32 counties and includes the Channel Islands, Wales and the Isle of Wight.

Kent have been winners in 1989 and 1991, and lost in the semi-finals in 1990 and in the quarter-finals in 1993. Since then success has been restricted to within the group where they are still the team to beat.

The team to Sri Lanka are not at their full county representative strength because several top players are not available for the tour. However they have representative players from Surrey, Hertfordshire and Essex who will be playing as 'honorary men of Kent'.

Captain/Manager Len Morris says in a letter to tour promoter Errol Seneviratne, ``Our representative strength on the field will not affect our strength of 'socialising' off the field of play''.

The Kent Veterans itinerary is:

February 24 v Lanka Cavaliers at Bloomfield grounds
February 26 v Confifi Group at BRC grounds
February 28 v Kandy Veterans at Asgiriya
March 5 v Kalutara Veterans at Kalutara
March 7 v Mercantile CA at MCA grounds.

The tour party of whom some are accompanied by their wives comprises:

Len Morris (captain/manager), Mike Baldcock, Mike Stephens, David Thorpe, Keith Chaney, Roger Sykes, John Hamill, John Swindall, Barry Hart, Eddie Churchley, John Huntley, Dave Roberts, Andrew Jenner, David Cobill, Martin Abbott.
