22 February - D-Day for West Indies captain

Trinidad and Tobago's Brian Lara will have to wait until February 22 to know his fate as West Indies captain according to the Chief Executive Officer of the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB), Stephen Camacho.

``We (WICB) cannot interfere with the process of the selection of a West Indies captain, it will proceed as usual, the selectors will meet and select the person they best see fit for the important post, and they will make their nomination to us,'' said Camacho.

``They will meet before February 22, maybe next week and then we the Board, will make the decision to ratify what they have recommended, it remains as usual,'' he added.

Camacho wished to correct the prevailing view that a decision on the captaincy was made at the two-day meeting between Camacho, West Indies Board president Pat Rousseau, Cricket Committee chairman Jackie Hendricks, chairman of West Indies selectors Mike Findlay, West Indies manager Clive Lloyd, West Indies coach Malcolm Marshall and West Indies captain Brian Lara.

``We met with the manager, then we met with the coach and then we met with the captain, to find out what went wrong on the tour and to listen to their individual reports, we have since made our own notes and recommendations based on this.''

``This will all be passed on to the members at our meeting in February, so that everyone can have an idea what we believe were the problems at the tour,''

``It was a very informative and productive meeting and it shows just how interested everyone is interested in the best for West Indies cricket, and everyone as much as possible is able to make time for the meeting,'' he added.

``It is now all about learning from what went wrong ... but in no way was this ever a meeting to determine the captaincy, that was always going to be done in the normal manner and we are all awaiting the meeting to view whoever is nominated by the selection panel,'' he stated.

``After every tour, there is no West Indies captain until another one is appointed and that is how it is for the time being as normal,'' he remarked.

Trinidadian Lara is currently under the gun, as most knowledgeable cricket personnel, feel that after suffering a humiliating 5-0 Test whipping and then a 6-1 thrashing in the One-day series against South Africa.
