Sri Lanka Schools: Kaushalya and Suranga - the star attractions
S M Jiffrey Abdeen - 18 March 1999

To get Kaushalya Weeraratne out early will be the orders which will be sent to the St. Anthony's College cricketers when they take on Trinity College in their 20th limited over clash to be played at Katugastota on Saturday at 9.30 a.m.

Antonians are in the lead in this abbreviated version of the Big Match with 11 wins against 7 by Trinity while the 1993 clash was abandoned due to bad weather. Trinity won last year and the Antonians last won in 1997. The Antonians hold the record for the highest total when they hit up 276 for 5 in 1993 and the lowest is by Trinity when they were dismissed for 70 in 1983 and 72 in 1984. Former Antonian skipper Marlon Von Haght has two centuries to his credit - 111 in 1981 and 138 in 1983 and Ajaz Shafeek made 121 not out in 1993.

Trinity's skipper Kaushalya Weeraratne could be a thorn in the flash to the Eagles with his belligerent batting. Last year he scored 62 not out in quick time to guide the lions to victory. Then in this year's big match he caned the Eagles attack to score a brisk 142 with 6 towering sixes and 14 fours in only 120 balls. Thus Trinity's success will hinge on Weeraratne.

In Suranga Pinnaduwa, the Antonians have an aggressive bat who could tear any attack to shreds if he only gets going. Others who could score quickly are Prasad Ranawaka, Nafees Nizam, Ravindra Wickremapala and Romesh Deen.

Cricket fans could be assured of champagne cricket with Weeraratne holding the trumps for the Lions and Suranga Pinnaduwa the key to success for the Antonians.
