Ronnie Burnet, Yorkshire's last amateur captain, has died aged 80. Burnet, Second XI captain from 1952-1957, had no first class experience when he succeeded Billy Sutcliffe in 1958 yet, in his second season in charge, Yorkshire won their first outright title since 1946.

Burnet was succeeded by Vic Wilson the following year and later served on the county committee. Brian Close, a member of the 1959 side who succeeded Wilson as captain, said last night: ``Ronnie put his heart and soul into Yorkshire cricket. It was his life. He did a very good job as captain and always encouraged the younger players. He never lost his enthusiasm for the club.''
