Sri Lanka Schools: Cambrians - a better record this season
The Daily News - 12 March 1999

The Battle of the golds 49th annual encounter between the two leading educational institutions of Moratuwa will be played at the De Soysa Stadium, Moratuwa on March 12 and 13. The limited over match will be played on March 14 Sunday at the same venue.

St. Sebastian's College will be led this year by third-year coloursman, right-hand batsman and opening bowler Nuwan Fernando who has 600 runs under his belt. Himal Perera a fresher will share the new ball with his skipper. His deputy will be a second year player Manoj Jude Fernando who is a left-handed batsman and a good fielder. Malshan Fernando is another second year player who toured Hongkong with the under-17 team. He scored a century with Nalanda and made three fifties. All the other players are freshers and the skipper can rely on them. Rayan Mendis, Kanchana Cooray, Premesh Perera and Suranga de Silva though they are freshers have done creditably. Suranga completed the 1,000-run mark with a hurricane century against Sri Sumangala, Panadura. Earlier he scored a century against St. Benedict's College.

The Cambrians will be led by Hasantha Fernando third-year coloursman and Sri Lanka under nineteen tour poolist. He has scored more than 800 runs and last year he passed the 1,000 mark. He scored centuries against S. Thomas', Wesley and Trinity. His deputy is second-year player Janaka Wannakuwatta - a right-hand batsman and reserve wicketkeeper who had passed the 600 mark. Pubudu Ranaweera is another second year player with all-round ability who has scored 600 runs and claimed 35 wickets. All other Cambrian players are freshers. But Hasantha can rely on Janaka Gunarathna, Manjula Bandara, Shammika Fernando, Kalpa Fernando, Shan Wijerathne and Rashan Pieris who have all produced results throughout the season. Rashan who is the stumper and opener of the side scored 1,000 runs and became the first to score this season and second fresher to achieve this feat in the history of Sri Lanka schools cricket. Out of the 18 matches played so far St. Sebastian's have won one and lost one while the other games were drawn. The Cambrians from nineteen outings have won three and drawn the rest.

The Cambrians have produced the better results this season but none can predict the result, as cricket is a game of glorious uncertainties.
