Canty in need of a captain The Christchurch Press - 10 March 1999 Canterbury's cricket selectors will be scurrying today to find a 12th player - and a captain - for the final Shell Trophy match against Northern Districts after Black Caps skipper Stephen Fleming was ruled out. They had hoped Fleming might be available for the Hamilton match, which starts on Friday, to replace Gary Stead, who is set to make his test debut against South Africa. But Fleming has been advised not to play by New Zealand Cricket's medical panel. New Zealand A wicketkeeper Gareth Hopkins will return to the Canterbury team to replace Glynn Howell, who deputised in last weekend's loss to Otago. With Stead, Nathan Astle, Chris Harris, and Geoff Allott on test duty, and Fleming, Craig McMillan, and Chris Cairns on the injured list, Canterbury will give its clutch of youngsters another opportunity in the first-class arena. Canterbury squad (with one to be added and a captain to be named): Carl Anderson, Shane Bond, Craig Cumming, Stephen Cunis, Robbie Frew, Gareth Hopkins, Chris Martin, Marcel McKenzie, Michael Papps, Mark Priest, Warren Wisneski.
