The Electronic Telegraph All over at Derby
Neil Hallam - 11 March 1999

Derbyshire's 14-man committee yesterday took the only course left to them after failing to stave off a vote of no confidence from the membership, announcing that they would resign en bloc as soon as a new administration could be put in place.

By 501 votes to 348 at Tuesday's extraordinary general meeting at Derby County's Pride Park Stadium, the county's members registered their disapproval of the committee's performance during six months of bitter dispute over the legitimate extent of the authority of the captain, Dominic Cork.

Because of the club's constitution, however, it will be June before a transfer of power to a new committee can take place.

``None of this was ever about player power,'' Cork insisted, ``and it is sad that the club had to be put through so much for a clear matter of principle to be established.''

Cork, who threatened to resign the captaincy and leave the club after insisting that he had been stripped of influence last September, can claim complete vindication in the events of the last two weeks.

Along with a new four-year contract, he has the guarantee of two years of captaincy and it was his recommendation which yesterday took Colin Wells back to the County Ground as manager/coach. ``Having a well-respected guy like Colin in our camp will be a great help,'' Cork said.

David Boon, the Durham captain, announced yesterday that he planned to retire from first-class cricket at the end of this year after a final season of county cricket.
