Western Province batsman Lloyd Ferreira will be Rawtenstall's professional this summer, after they pipped North East club Hartlepool to his signature.

A right-hand bat with a top first-class score of 116, 24-year-old Ferreira bowls left-arm medium pacer in club cricket in South Africa.

Rawtenstall skipper Keith Roscoe said: ``We have gone for a batsman because we need the runs. Keith Arthurton scored more than 1100 last season and that still wasn't enough for us.

``Besides, we have strengthened our amateur bowling with the return of Peter Seal from the Bolton Association.''

Ferreira, who is rated as an attacking player, opens the batting in one-day cricket and goes in around number four in the four-day game.
