The Christchurch Press New Zealand: Bad day for Park sides
The Christchurch Press - 8 March 1999

Lancaster Park-Woolston was on the losing end of both finals in the WestpacTrust Cup one-day first grade club cricket finals.

The men's team was convincingly beaten yesterday by High School Old Boys and the women's side edged out by South Canterbury in the final over of their 50-over contest.

The men's game was a complete reverse of Saturday's trophy match when Old Boys was dismissed for 86. Yesterday it was Park's turn to fail, the side making a meagre 79 in reply to Old Boys 182 for eight.

Old Boys was given a solid start with a second wicket stand of 54 off 74 balls from Jeremy Innes and James Barrett but, on the lively pitch, Sam Martin was the only other batsman to score confidently. It was a pitch for the medium pacers with Anthony Timpson spearheading the Park attack. Then Hamish Anderson for Old Boys also took advantage of the conditions to rip through the tentative Lancaster Park batting.

South Canterbury women chose to bat and were in trouble at 64 for six, then an eighth wicket stand of 59 from Miranda Walker and Megan Wakefield rescued the innings.

Lancaster Park lost the in-form New Zealand captain Debbie Hockley in the fourth over, but Lisa Astle and Victoria Milne steadied the innings.

Wickets fell regularly and Park was nine down needing three from the final over. Haidee Tiffen, who had bowled accurately, finished the match taking a safe catch with five balls remaining.
