Sri Lanka Schools: Thurstan by five wkts
Dinesh Weerawansa - 15 March 1999

Good team work helped Thurstan to register a five-wicket win over their traditional rivals Isipatana in their annual limited over cricket encounter for the W. A. de Silva Trophy played at P. Saravanamuttu Stadium yesterday.

Isipatana, put in to bat, were soon in trouble as Thurstan bowlers ran through their top order and had them at 77 for 6 at one stage. But some sensible batting by N. Chamara Sampath (29 n.o.) and Manoj Fernando (31) helped them to make 159 all out in 45.3 overs.

Thurstan, in reply, started their run chase in style with their openers Dhammika Premadasa and Arjuna Dayananda adding 64 runs for the first wicket. They put on a half century opening stand which laid the foundation for a Thurstan victory in this low scoring game. Premadasa was the more aggressive of the two as he completed a well-deserved half century which included eigth boundaries.

Scores:

Isipatana 159 all out 45.3 overs (Sahan Wijesekera 13, Manoj Fernando 31, N. Chamara Sampath 29 n.o., S. Wijesinghe 12, Thushara Perera 2 for 24, G. de Silva 3 for 20).

Thurstan: 161 for 5 in 41.2 overs (Dhammika Premadasa 50, Arjuna Dayananda 13, Nalaka de Silva 22, Nisal Randika Gamage 35 n.o., Chamith Aravinda 23 n.o., Malinga Abeyratne 3 for 25).
