Sri Lanka News Round-up The Daily News - 4 February 1999 Two women umpires pass BCCSL exam Tilani Priyangika Nissanka of Prajapathi BMV, Horana and Padma Karunaratne of Shakthi Sports Club Anuradhapura passed the umpiring examination conducted by the Board of Control for Cricket in Sri Lanka (BCCSL) and held recently. A total of 21 members from the Colombo District Women's Cricket Association (CDWCA) participated in the seminars and 19 sat the examination. In addition K. R. P. Doolwela (Ceylon Electricity Board Head office), W. L. M. Fernando (Government Hospital Puttalam), B. A. C. Deepthika (Sri Lanka Police Department), Kanchana Perera (Lanka Ladies CC), D. G. D. Prasanthi (Department of Census and Statistics) and Upeksha Thabrew (Shakthi Sports Club) have qualified to umpire matches conducted by the CDWCA. Match drawn St. Benedict's held Prince of Wales to a draw in their inter-school cricket match ended at Kotahena yesterday. Trailing by 109 runs on the first innings, Benedictines were forced to follow on but they made a healthy 190 for 3 at close. It was a fighting 118-run opening partnership between Chintaka Perera (90) and Jerome Adams (49) that saved them, after some poor batting in the first innings. Scores: Prince of Wales: 252 for 8 decl. (R. Perera 37, J. Wannakuwatte 88, K. David 54, S. Wijeratne 12, A. Gunatillake 2 for 29, S. Perera 3 for 53, M. Fernando 2 for 33). St. Benedict's: 143 all out (Chintaka Perera 29, Suranga Fernando 38, Malka Fernando 26, S. Weerawansa 6 for 44, J. Gunaratne 2 for 23) and 190 for 3 at close. Fine knock of 78 by Ranga S M Jiffrey Abdeen Half centuries by skipper Ranga Dissanayake 78 (6 fours, 4 sixes) are Zahran Hajireen 61 (4 fours) for St. Sylvester's College was the highlight of their School's Lemonade Cup Cricket Tournament match against Thurstan College which ended in a draw at University Grounds, Peradeniya yesterday. St. Sylvester's who were 107 for no wicket overnight did not capitalise much from this as they lost both openers quite early with two runs being added to the overnight score. Only redeeming feature was that they overtook their opponent's score. At close Thurstanites had replied with 117 for 4 with N. de Silva scoring 61 which was his second half ton of the match. Scores: Thurstan College: 215 and 117 for 4 in 44 overs, 210 mts. (N. de Silva 61, D. Premadasa 14, A. Dayananda 19, N. Randika 15, A. Perera 2 for 20, C. Ratnayake 2 for 17).
