Sherantha century off 64 balls

Sherantha Mendis hit a blistering century off 64 balls inclusive of 11 sixes and 4 fours to enable St. Anne's total 260 on the first day of their inter-school cricket match against De Mazenod at Kurunegala on Friday.

By the close the home team had the visitors struggling at 110 for 9.

Peterites in strong position

Peterite A. Samsudeen took 5 for 47 to restrict St. Benedict's to a first innings total of 158 on the first day of their inter-school cricket match at Kotahena on Friday.

By the close St. Peter's had replied with 134 for 4 with Suranga Pinto making 55 with six fours.

Suranga Silva 70

Suranga Silva smacked a half-century for St. Sebastian's and Ranga Dissanayake took five wickets for St. Sylvester's on the first day of their school cricket match played at Moratuwa on Friday.

Sebastianites declared at 226 for 9 and the Sylvestrians replied with 38 for 2 at the close.

Aravinda bowls St. John's to victory

Left-arm spinner L. Aravinda with a match bag of 8 for 86 bowled St. John's College, Panadura to a seven wicket win over Sri Rahula College, Katugastota with four overs to spare in their Elephant Lemonade Cup inter-school cricket match concluded at Peradeniya on Friday.

Mahela Jayawardene 217 not out

Sri Lanka 'cap' Mahela Jayawardene, playing his first game after the tour of Australia thumped a superb unbeaten double century (217) as the defending champions SSC went on to make 440 for 6 declared, while Colts in reply made a bold 165 for 3 at close yesterday in their Premier Cricket Tournament match at Maitland Place.

Jayawardene's knock included 24 boundaries and three sixes off 357 deliveries. Colts were 50 for 3 at one stage, but an unbroken 115 run partnership for the fourth wicket by Indika de Saram (not out 51 with eight boundaries) and Chaminda Mendis (not out 50 with five fours) saved them.

CCC well placed to get outright win

CCC look set to get an outright win early today in their Premier Cricket Tournament match against Moors at Braybrooke Place. Yesterday, CCC went on to make 335 in reply to Moors paltry 99 and in their second turn Moors were 15 for 1 at close.

CCC's innings were highlighting with three half centuries by D. Hunukumbura (81 with 12 boundaries and a six), Anushka Polonawita (55 with 10 fours) and D. Arnold (62 with seven fours).

NCC set for outright win

NCC should win easily today over BRC in their Premier Cricket tournament match at Havelock Park (Colts Grounds). NCC made 403 for 8 declared and BRC were bundled out for a mere 116. NCC batting a second turn were 213 for 3 at close yesterday.

Russel Arnold banged a terrific unbeaten 100 in only 92 balls in NCC's second innings with six boundaries and three sixes while Ruwan Kalpage with 5 for 28 helped bundle out BRC for a low total.

High scoring draw at Pannipitiya

Nalanda and Dharmapala inter-school cricket match ended in a no-decision at Pannipitiya yesterday.

Nalanda scored 327 for 8 dec. in reply to Dharmapala 233 for 9 decl. due to three good knocks by S. Peiris (62), M. Porage (59) and H. Gunaswardena (46).

Dharmapala in their second essay were 154 for 6 at stumps with S. Dinesh unbeaten with a elegant 50 and S. Thushara a fine 49).

St. Peter's College and St. Benedict's College inter-school cricket match ended in a tame draw at Kotahena yesterday.

The feature of yesterday's play was Bens Channa Devabandu fine 85, his second half century and Petes S. Pinto good double 55 and 5 for 49.
