Sri Lanka: Lalith and wife die under tragic circumstances The Daily news - 23 February 1999 Former Thomian cricketer Lalith Ratnayake and his wife died under tragic circumstances at his mother's residence at Mt. Lavinia Sunday morning. Ratnayake (41), described by former Sri Lanka and Thomian cricketer Saliya Ahangama as ``a gentleman par excellence'' was an all-rounder of quality - a right-hand bat, left-arm spinner and a good cover fieldsman. Ratnayake played for S. Thomas', Mt Lavinia for three years (1975-77) under the leadership of Mohan de Silva and the Ganeshan brothers, Sashi and Ajit. He was vice-captain in his final year. During this period he represented Sri Lanka in the Ali Bhutto trophy under 19 series against Pakistan, being vice-captain one year. Ratnayake continued his cricket career briefly with Colombo CC before concentrating on his job as a tea taster at John Keells.
