AUSTRALIA v NEW ZEALAND
Wisden CricInfo staff - January 1, 1999

At Adelaide, December 7 (day/night). Australia won by three wickets. Toss: New Zealand.

Mark Waugh purred to his 11th one-day century, 104 off 113 balls, which should have set up a comfortable win. But Australia lost wickets regularly after his opening stand of 156 with Di Venuto, and eventually sneaked home with two balls to spare, when Bichel late-cut his first ball for four. This was a victory for Australia's young talent brigade: Di Venuto scored 77 off 74 balls, form he never reproduced again in the season, while Gilchrist batted steadily and Harvey bowled well under pressure. New Zealand's top order started well, reaching 186 for two, but the later batting fell away.

Man of the Match: M. E. Waugh. Attendance: 30,049.
