NEW ZEALAND v SOUTH AFRICA Wisden CricInfo staff - January 1, 1999
At Perth, January 16 (day/night). South Africa won by 67 runs. Toss: South Africa. International debut: M. Ntini. Fast bowler Makhaya Ntini took a few large steps for himself but greater ones for his country when he became the first black cricketer to represent South Africa. With surprising pace and cunning for a player who first picked up a ball five years before, Ntini unsettled every batsman who faced him. His first ball was a fine in-swinging yorker and his first wicket a gem: an away seamer which Fleming edged defensively, coincidentally giving keeper Boucher his first international scalp. Kallis, the epitome of style and balance, scored his maiden century at this level, 111 from 140 balls, and the innings lost a cylinder when he was caught in the deep in the 42nd over. Man of the Match: J. H. Kallis. Attendance: 10,794. © Wisden CricInfo Ltd |
