An unbeaten century from Stuart Williams, his first in limited-overs internationals, and fine all-round cricket from Hooper completed a miserable week for India. The sound of selectors' axes was soon heard in the subcontinent. Having gone against convention by putting West Indies in, Tendulkar saw Williams bat throughout the innings, hitting ten fours in 149 balls. India could still have qualified by winning in 45 overs. An opening stand of 87 between Ganguly and Sidhu put them well on the way. Instead, they were undone by the three spinners, and a death wish that saw first Tendulkar, who reached the crease this time in the 29th over, and then Azharuddin run out by Lewis. More than seven overs remained when Hooper bowled Prasad.
