Wisden CricInfo staff - January 1, 1999

At R. Premadasa Stadium, Colombo, June 21 (day/night). Sri Lanka won by seven wickets. Toss: New Zealand.

Sri Lanka bounced back quickly from their defeat against India. Young scored 55 from 52 balls for the visitors in an opening stand of 71, but they declined from 107 for one to 200 for nine, their last six wickets falling for 20. Jayasuriya provided his customary fast start, 57 from 62 balls; then Atapattu again combined with De Silva, and their partnership of 95 saw Sri Lanka most of the way home.

Man of the Match: M. S. Atapattu.
