PERTH, Australia, Jan 27 (AFP) - A disciplinary hearing into the
conduct of Sri Lankan cricket captain Arjuna Ranatunga will resume in
Perth on Thursday.
International Cricket Council referee Peter Van der Merwe said
Wenesday umpire Ross Emerson, who has been stood-down on health
grounds from Friday's Sri Lanka-England clash, was among those
required to attend the hearing at the WACA ground.
It was Emerson's no-balling of Sri Lankan spinner Muttiah Muralitharan
for throwing that sparked an angry outburst from Ranatunga, who
protested heatedly with match officials in their one day game against
England on Saturday.
Play was halted for nearly 15 minutes and Ranatunga now faces five
counts of misconduct.
Four of the charges were laid by Emerson and fellow umpire Tony
McQuillan and the other by Van der Merwe, who added that Muralitharan
and England captain Alec Stewart would also be at the hearing.
England's Graeme Hick and Sri Lankans Sanath Jayasuria and Ranjit
Fernado have also been told to be there.
The hearing opened in Adelaide Tuesday but was adjourned after about
90 minutes.
Van der Merwe said the Sri Lankan skipper had been charged under
clause one of the ICC Code of Conduct which calls for captains to be
responsible at all times for ensuring play is conducted within the
spirit and laws of the game.
