Cullinan makes history

Atul Kahate
27 January 1999

Darryl Cullinan has become only the second player to be given out 'Handled the Ball' in Limited Overs International (LOI) cricket. The only previous batsman to be dismissed in this fashion was India's Mohinder Amarnath, 13 years ago.

Incidentally, Amarnath was also given out 'Obstructing the Field' once - a 'feat' later achieved by Pakistan's Ramiz Raja. Ramiz was attempting to complete his hundred off the last ball of the innings and when he realized that he could not do so easily, obstructed the field.

The following table lists unusual dismissals in LOI cricket, the last one happening a decade ago.

Batsman How out Runs Teams Ground Season Date

M Amarnath HB 15 Ind-Aus Melbourne 1985-86 29 Feb 86
Ramiz Raja OF 99 Pak-Eng Karachi 1987-88 20 Nov 87
M Amarnath OF 28 Ind-SL Ahmedabad (2) 1989-90 22 Jan 89
DJ Cullinan HB 46 RSA-WI Durban 1998-99 27 Jan 99

Note: HB - Handled the Ball, OF - Obstructing the Field
