Jamaica Trial Match: Adams, Hinds to the rescue

Adams scored ... 73 runs
8 January 1999

Runs proved hard to get on yesterday's opening day of the final trial match at Sabina Park to select Jamaica's team for the start of the regional Busta Cup cricket championship next week.

Helped by half centuries from Jimmy Adams 73 and Wavell Hinds 70, Adams' XI reached 179 for nine at the close of play.

The two featured in a third-wicket partnership worth 113 runs before Hinds, who hit two sixes, a five and eight fours from 138 balls, was brilliantly caught at second slip by Tony Powell off the bowling of spinner Nehemiah Perry.

Adams, who also fell to the Powell/Perry combination, stroked four boundaries from 117 balls. The two had come together after pacers Oneil Richards and Audley Sanson had reduced Adams' X1 to 25 for two with both openers, Marlon Kennedy (0) and Carl Wright (eight) back in the pavilion.

Bowling for Robert Samuels' XI Sanson has already taken three for 41 from 17 overs, Perry three for 43 from 23 overs and Bryan Murphy with two for 41 from 14 overs. Tony Powell picked up four superb catches at second slip.

The day's play began an hour late after some wet spots around the wicket were allowed to dry out.

At the close, Kirk Powell was unbeaten on three, while Dwight Mais was yet to get off the mark.
