Hasan Raza to lead Pakistan U-19 team

LAHORE, Jan 16: The youngest-ever Test cricketer Hasan Raza was named captain of the 14-member Pakistan under-19 team picked after a one-day trials here at the Gaddafi Stadium on Saturday for the first unofficial Test.

Pakistan and South Africa under-19 teams are to play the first 'Test' at the National Stadium, Karachi, from Jan 31 to Feb 3.

The national junior selection committee, comprising Aftab Baloch (chairman), Azhar Khan, Maazullah Khan and Qasim Baloch selected the team. In all, 42 players were attended the camp.

Former Test opener Mohsin Hasan Khan has been retained as the chief coach of the junior side while Azmat Rana hasbeen appointed as a coach and Abdul Raufasthe physiotherapist.

The selected 14 players have been asked to report to the chief coach at the National Stadium, Karachi on Jan 23:

Hasan Raza (captain), Imran Farhat, Imran Nazir, Taufiq Umar, Faisal Iqbal, Saad Umar, Shoaib Malik, Humayun Farhat (wicketkeeper), Irfan Fazil, Zahid Saeed, Kashif Raza, Danish Kenairya, Yasir Arafat, and Abdul Rahman.

Majority of the selected players had played for the Pakistan under-19 and under-15 sides in the representative matches at home or abroad. Prominent among them are off-spinner Shoaib Malik, wicketkeeper/batsman Humayun Farhat, pacemen Imran Nazir and Irfan Fazil, openers Taufiq Umar and Imran Farhat and middle-order batsmen Faisal Iqbal and Yasir Arafat.

The South Africa under-19 side is beginning its tour of Pakistan with a three-day match against Hyderabad XI at the Niaz Stadium from Jan 26 to 28. During the tour, the visitors will play three unofficial Tests at Karachi, Sialkot and Sheikhupura and three one-day international matches at Gujranwala, Lahore and Karachi before returning home on Feb 27.

Following is itinerary of the South Africa side:

January 26 to 28: Match against Hyderabad XI at the Niaz Stadium, Hyderabad.

Jan 31 to Feb 3: First 'Test' at the National Stadium, Karachi.

Feb 6 to 8: Match against Faisalabad under-19 side at the Iqbal Stadium, Faisalabad.

Feb 11 to 14: Second 'Test' at the Jinnah Stadium, Sialkot.

Feb 17 to 20: Third 'Test' at the Sheikhupura Stadium.

Feb 23: First one-day international at the Municipal Stadium, Gujranwala.

Feb 25: Second one-day international at the Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore.

Feb 27: Third one-day international at the National Stadium, Karachi.
