The Gabba, Brisbane, Monday-Sri Lanka will hold the next under-19 World Cup cricket tourney in January 2000.

President of the Board of Control for Cricket in Sri Lanka, Thilanga Sumathipala and Chief Executive, Dhammika Ranatunga who presented the bid at the ICC meeting held in Christchurch, New Zealand yesterday received an unanimous nod from the ICC.

The previous youth World Cup was held in South Africa and the Sri Lankans who were led by the promising Pradeep Hewage fared brilliantly and left their mark.

Hewage was adjudged the best batsman of the tournament and Prasanna Jayewardene, the best wicket keeper.

16 countries will figure in this tournament which will be played on the format used successfully in South Africa.

The ICC meeting also decided on an international panel of the best six referees and a 12 man umpires panel comprising two from England, one each from the other eight full member countries and two others to be chosen from the present international panel.

Kenya, Bangladesh and Scotland have also been asked to nominate one umpire each and they will officiate in some of the practice games and act as the fourth umpire in selected World Cup games.

The next Commonwealth games cricket tourney will be in the Manchester games in 2002. It will be a shorter duration tourney and not 50 over games.

A final decision on the holding of a Test cricket world championships was deferred because work is proceeding on a full review of an international tours schedule and until that is complete, no final decision can be taken.
