Kallis and SA on top of CEAT

South African all-rounder Jacques Kallis leads the CEAT International Cricketer of the Year 1998-99 ratings as at January 19.

Kallis has 69 points, but is hotly pursued by Sri Lanka's Muthiah Muralitharan, Indian Sachin Tendulkar and South African Allan Donald, each of whom have 66 points.

Alec Stewart (58 points), Stuart Macgill (5), Shaun Pollock (51), Mark Taylor and Rahul Dravid (47 each), and Glenn McGrath and Darren Gough (42 each) make up the top ten in the ratings.

The only other Sri Lankan in the top 20 is Sanath Jayasuriya who is placed 13th with 38 points.

South Africa continued to retain their position as the top nation in the CEAT International rankings for the year, with 64 points - 21 points clear from their nearest rivals India and Australia, who each have 43 points.

Sri Lanka take up fourth position with 38 points followed by England (33), Zimbabwe (27), New Zealand (21), Pakistan (16), Kenya and West Indies (4) and Bangladesh (2).

Moors have SSC groggy at 118/7

Table leaders Moors SC had defending champions SSC struggling at 118 for 7 on a rain restricted first day's play of the Premier championship match at Braybrooke Place yesterday.

The match began at 3 p.m. due to wet conditions. Moors winning the toss inserted SSC first, and did well to grab seven wickets by the end of the day. Fast-medium bowler Rasika Priyadarshana took 3 for 52 for Moors while Shantha Kalavitigoda was SSC's top scorer with 40. The match continues today at 10 a.m.

NCC 100/4 v Tamil Union

Tamil Union reduced NCC to 100 for 4 on another rain-restricted first day of a Premier championship match played at the Sara Stadium yesterday.

Fast medium bowler Hasan Rushdy captured 2 for 19 to put his former club in a spot of bother after they had been put into bat. The match commenced at 4 p.m.

Galle CC 233; Panadura 10/0

Half-centuries from Ruwin Peiris and Pasan Wanasinghe saw Galle CC make 233 all out on the first day of their Premier championship match against Panadura SC at Panadura yesterday.

By the close Panadura had replied with 10 for no loss. The match continues today at 10 a.m.

Lanky fast-medium bowler Indika Gallage took 4 for 13 to send BRC reeling to 42 for 5 by the close in reply to CCC's first innings total of 154 on the first day of the Premier championship match played at Maitland Crescent yesterday.

The match will continue today at 10 a.m.

Kurunegala YCC were heading for a huge total after they finished a rain restricted first day on 175 for no loss against Sebastianites on the first day of their Premier championship match played at De Soysa Stadium yesterday.

Put into bat first Kurunegala YCC openers Nishantha Munasinghe (77 with 1 six, 7 fours) and Senadi Malmeewella (79 with 9 fours) made full use of good batting conditions to share an unfinished century opening partnership. The match began at 1.15 p.m.

Dilshan Gunawardana missed out on a century by eight runs as S. Thomas', Mt. Lavinia hit up 242 for 8 declared on the first day of their schools cricket match against Prince of Wales at Moratuwa yesterday.

By the close the Cambrians had replied with 102 for 3. The match continues today at 10 a.m.

By the close the Kurunegala school had lost half the side for 107. The match continues today at 10 a.m.

Half centuries by G. M. Teeban 60 (2 fours) and S. Jeremy 52 (6 fours) helped St. Benedicts College, Kotahena to score 181 for 7 declared in their inter-school cricket match against St. Anthony's College, Kandy which began at Katugastota yesterday. The match will be continued today at 9.30 a.m.

Due to a wet outfield play began only at 11 a.m. which was continued till close of play under gloomy conditions with the sun never making its appearance the whole day.

Vidyartha 'A' in command

Vidyartha College 'A' look poised for the kill in their inter-school cricket match against newcomers Galagedera Central College which began in Kandy yesterday. The match will be continued today at 9.45 a.m.

Galagedera Central College in reply to their opponents total of 150 were dismissed for a paltry 35 but were lucky that the follow on was not enforced.

Ananda-Trinity game postponed

The inter school cricket match between Ananda College Colombo and Trinity College which was scheduled to commence yesterday did not come off due to bad weather during the week and the wicket could not be prepared. This match is likely to played on a later date.

No play at Lake View

There was no play in the inter school cricket match between St. Sylvesters College and Dharmaraja College which was scheduled to commence at Lake View yesterday.

Ishan (7/39) skittles out Royal for 147

A fine spell of bowling by Ishan Hettiarachchi (7 for 39) helped St. Joseph's to bowl out Royal for a hopeless 147 in their inter-school cricket match which began at Reid Avenue yesterday.

Kingswood shot out for 99

Bowlers called the tune on the opening day of their inter-school cricket encounter between Wesley and Kingswood which began at Campbell Park yesterday.

Despite bowling out Kingswood for 124, Wesley failed to consolidate and lost five wickets for 99 runs by the close.

A penetrative spell of 7 for 42 by left-arm leg spinner Jeevantha Livera helped Maris Stella to bowl out Sri Sumangala for 158 on day one of their inter-school cricket match which began at Negombo yesterday.

Maris Stella, in reply, were 134 for 7 at close (Ashan Dias 37, Mevan Fernando 21, K. Bulathsinhala 21, A. Jayalath 16, D. Rodrigo 15 n.o., N. Quintus 4 for 49, A. Jayatillake 2 for 14).

No play due to wet wicket

Not a ball was bowled in the inter-school cricket match between D. S. Senanayake MV and Dharmasoka College, Ambalangoda due to a wet wicket at Wijerama Mawatha. The match is likely to be put off for a later date.

Cambrians draw with Ananda

Cambrians drew with Ananda in a school cricket match played at Moratuwa. Ananda replied with 233 all out in reply to the Cambrians total of 277/8 declared. Ishan Abeysinghe top-scored with 86. C. Chaturanga made 48. When rain stopped play on the second day Cambrians were 155/4. Shammika Fernando made 71.

DMCC fund-raising program

The Dickoya Maskeliya Cricket Club (DMCC) which has a history of 129 years, started by British planters in 1870, has undertaken a massive fund raising project to upgrade the two ancient billiard tables which are over 75 years old.

The DMCC has organised an Open Snooker Tournament to be held on February 13, which will be open to all snooker clubs in Sri Lanka. Entries for this tournament will close on January 31, and should be addressed to Ananda Subasinghe, Billiard Convenor, Dickoya Maskeliya Cricket Club, Dickoya. Valuable prizes are being offered to the Winners as well as to the runner-up.

The highlight of the program will be the selection of the ``Valentine Queen'' at the Valentine Dance on February 13, in the early hours of February 14, on Valentine Day, to raise funds for the DMCC project.

The event is being organised with the fullest cooperation of DMCC President, Raja Broodie and Secretary, Ranga Gunasekera.

All members of the DMCC have extended their fullest co-operation towards making the event a big success, Billiard Convenor, Ananda Subasinghe said.
