A good allround performance by Skipper Sarath Ranaweera (5 for 9 and 33 not out) pulled Vidyartha College out of the woods and led them to a surprise five wicket win over the more fancied St. Anthony's College to enter the finals of the Yasaratne Tennekoon Memorial Challenge Trophy Tournament organised by the Kandy Regional Cricket Board and played at Police Grounds, yesterday.

Poor batting by the Antonians cost them the match as they were shot out for 90 in just 20.5 overs with none of their top order batsmen coming to terms with on the spot bowling of Vidyartha K. G. Ranjith captured 4 for 15 and Sarath Ranaweera 4 for 9).

When Vidyartha batted they were off to a poor start with the score board reading 20 for 4 at one stage. But some intelligent batting by Sarath Ranaweera 33 not out and Dasun Jayakody 23 brought to the winning post. The winning run was off a wide providing an anticlimax.

Scores:

St. Anthony's College 90 all out in 20.5 overs (R. Wickremapala 20, K. Jayaratne 20, N. Nizam 13, S. P. Basnayake 14, K. G. Ranjith 4 for 15, S. Ranaweera 4 for 9).

Vidyartha College 91 for 5 in 21.5 overs (D.T. Jayakody 23, S. Ranaweera 33 not out, R. L. Bandara 10, K. Jayaratne 2 for 14).
