Muralitharan issue a world problem, says Taylor

SYDNEY, Jan 24 (AFP) - Australian Test cricket captain Mark Taylor said Sunday the bad-tempered one-day match in Adelaide Saturday proved the Muttiah Muralitharan affair was not only an Australia-Sri Lanka problem.

The Sri Lankan off-spinner was no-balled for throwing by Australian umpire Ross Emerson, standing at square leg, early in the match against England in Adelaide.

The Sri Lankans walked to the boundary in protest, and play was held up for 12 minutes while Emerson, co-umpire Tony McQuillan, match referee Peter Van Der Merve of South Africa, and Sri Lankan captain Arjuna Ranatunga held heated discussions.

Later in the game, there were signs of severe tension between the teams as Sri Lanka performed heroically to win by one wicket with two balls to spare after England had made 302 for three.

It has been widely speculated that disciplinary action could be taken against both sides.

Taylor said the match got out of hand despite both sides playing away from home, with neutral umpires. This showed there was no bias involved, he said.

He said the Muralitharan issue was a problem world cricket had to solve, and recommended umpires report bowlers with suspect actions rather than publicly calling them.
