SYDNEY, Jan 6 (AFP) - Australian cricket selectors ignored Shane Warne's involvement with an Indian bookmaker on Wednesday by naming the star legspinner captain of their one-day side for a triangular series against England and Sri Lanka this month.

Batsman Mark Waugh, who with Warne was fined by the Australian Cricket Board for selling information on weather and pitch conditions to the bookmaker during Australia's tour of Sri Lanka in 1994, was appointed his deputy.

Warne and Mark Waugh were both fined by the Board in February 1995, although the penalty was hushed up until it was leaked last month.

Warne and Waugh were to be interviewed by Pakistan judge Malik Mohammad Qayyum at Melbourne on Friday into their claims former Pakistan captain tried to bribe them to throw a match in 1995.

Waugh's brother, Steve, the regular one-day skipper, will miss at least the first two games against England and World Cup champions Sri Lanka because of a hamstring strain.

Australia open the tri-nation tournament against England in Brisbane on Sunday and play Sri Lanka in Sydney next Wednesday.

Warne has played 96 one-day matches and led Australia against New Zealand last season when Steve Waugh was injured.

An ACB spokesman said Steve Waugh would travel with the squad as he had to oversee Australia's preparations for the World Cup in England in May, and also to get treatment from Australian team phsyiotherpaist Errol Alcott.

Once Waugh is fit, one player will be dropped from the squad.

Australia squad
