The Barbados Cavaliers took five prizes, including the winners' trophy, when the 1999 West Indies Windball Tournament ended in Antigua last weekend.

Barbados were overall winners of the women's competition, which was held from July 1-4 and attracted a record 36 teams, including 12 from hosts Antigua.

Shelly Quintyne was voted MVP after fine performances with both bat and ball, while Pamela Lavine's 89 earned her the prize for most runs. Team-mate Pamela Clarke had the most wickets with nine scalps to her name, and Kim Nicholls was adjudged the fastest bowler.

Barbados Cavaliers played unbeaten, sailing through the preliminary rounds with victories over Antiguan teams Courts Old Road and Antigua Bullets, and London King Size of St. Vincent and the Grenadines.

In the semifinal, the Cavaliers quickly overhauled St. Kitts' total of 58-8, by making 60-1. Quintyne topscored with 36 runs, and also took two wickets for six runs.

In the final, the Bajans beat home team Rossi Enforcers by three wickets to take back the trophy they last held in 1995 and 1996.

``The entire team put in a good effort,'' said manager/coach Rawle Clarke. ``I thought that our fielding and bowling performances were above all of the other teams in the competition.''

Next year's tournament will be held at Disney, Orlando, Florida, from June 8-11, 2000, according to the promoters, All Sports Promotion.

Anthony Harford, managing director of the Trinidad-based sports marketing company, also disclosed that after negotiation with sponsors British American Insurance, prize money will increase from US$12 000 to US$22 000.
