South African batsman Dale Benkenstein is back in Barbados.

But this time the 25-year-old has not come to play cricket, but to have some fun.

He is here on vacation to relax with his buddies at Wanderers Cricket Club and recharge for the upcoming season after a rigorous campaign in the recent World Cup.

“Since I was last here, there has been a lot of development,” said Benkenstein, who played for Wanderers during the 1994 season.

“The people have again been good to me. The Chefette is still there with the beef and potato roti, and Harbour Lights is still there,” he said with a laugh.

WeekendSport caught up with Benkenstein as he had a light work-out at Wanderers. He spoke of South Africa’s ill-fated departure from the World Cup when they had a last-ball tie with Australia.

The match ended when South Africa’s last man, Allan Donald, was run out in a mix-up with Lance Klusener with one run needed off four balls.

“The whole place (dressing room) was like a funeral,” said Benkenstein, who was in the 15-man party but did not play a match.

“The worst thing is that you knew you were packing your bag for the final time.

“To lose fair and square would have been OK, but to come so close and go out like that was cruel.”

Benkenstein, who has led Natal from the age of 22 and has also captained South Africa “A”, said however, that the players are sure to be focused when they take on England later this year.

He also said his ambition was to lead South Africa.
