The Electronic Telegraph Crawley recalled to face South Africans
Keith Graham - 21 July 1999

Scotland's selectors have picked a strong 12-man squad for their one-day game against the South African Cricket Academy next Tuesday at Forfar, the first in a series of four to be played during the next two weeks.

Steve Crawley, the Grange opening batsman who played against Scotland for MCC, is recalled. Crawley has been in sparkling form for his club and will partner Carlton's Bryn Lockie. Also recalled are pace bowlers James Brinkley and Asim Butt plus four other members of the World Cup squad, all-rounders Ian Stanger, Greig Williamson and Mike Allingham and off-spinner Nick Dyer.

Craig Wright, another in-form player, makes up a potent seam attack and left-hander Drew Parsons and George Salmond, who captains the side, ensure plenty of batting depth.

Aberdeenshire captain Neil MacRae, last capped in 1995, gets an overdue recall to open the batting in the three-day game, replacing Crawley, and off-spinner Gregor Maiden and young Carlton opener Fraser Watts come in for Parsons and Williamson.

Experienced Test player Pat Symcox will lead the Academy side, who arrive in Scotland on Monday.

The one-day game starts at 10.45am and will be played to ICC one-day rules. The other three games take place on Sunday Aug 1 at Myreside, Edinburgh, Saturday Aug 7 at Hamilton Crescent and Sunday Aug 8 at Titwood.

Wednesday's three-day game at Forthill begins at 11am with the other three-day game starting on Tuesday Aug 3 at Boghall, Linlithgow.
