Some could question Jeff Crowe's sense.

The former New Zealand cricket captain is saying goodbye to strolling around some of the world's most prestigious golf courses, to manage the Black Caps.

Crowe has been running a corporate golfing holiday company in Florida since retiring from cricket in 1992.

When he was appointed Black Caps manager a fortnight ago he was taking a group to the famed Pebble Beach course in California, but he has given that apparent life of luxury up to return to the hurly burly of international cricket. But why?

``I guess I always thought I would get back into the game sometime when the time was right. The way things worked out, it's right now.

``I've had a good break from the game and I'm ready to return.''

Crowe, 41, said his golfing tours' experience, where he regularly guided people around the world and dealt with travel companies, should stand him in good stead in his new position.

Crowe captained New Zealand during 1987 and his input on tactical and technical matters should also be of assistance, and is welcomed by coach David Trist.

Crowe said he did not envisage having a hands-on coaching role, but he hoped to have some involvement in selectorial decisions.

Crowe believes he and Trist -- they first met when he was playing for Auckland and Trist coaching Canterbury -- will be compatible.

``I know of his style and the passion he has for the game.''

Crowe intends having a long session with outgoing manager John Graham.

``My job firstly is as a manager, and I'll be talking at length to John about how he ran things, and then adapt and adjust accordingly where need be.''
