NatWest Trophy: Chapple out The Lancashire Evening Telegraph - 7 July 1999 Glen Chapple was ruled out of Lancashire's NatWest Trophy fourth round tie against Hampshire at Southampton today. Chapple suffered a hand injury trying to stop a fierce drive from former team mate Ronnie Irani during Saturday's National League victory against Essex at Old Trafford. His absence was a big blow to Lancashire, leaving them with only Peter Martin and Ian Austin as front line seamers as they continue their defence of the NatWest competition. Mike Smethurst was included in the squad as well as Chris Schofield, who made a surprise switch to opener in the National League game against Essex. Schofield has been in superb batting form, smashing more than 300 runs in the second team's four AON Trophy qualifying matches including one century, and another 100 for Littleborough in the Central Lancashire League last weekend. Lancashire were again without Mike Atherton, although the former England skipper hopes to play in the four-day first class match against Sri Lanka A starting at Old Trafford on Friday.
