Nottinghamshire are favourites to win the race to sign Shoaib Akhtar, the Pakistan fast bowler, now that Vasbert Drakes, the club's current overseas player, has made his future intentions clear.
Akhtar has been linked with a move to Trent Bridge since playing a spectacular part in his country's World Cup campaign and the way is clear for him to sign following news that Drakes has set his sights on a West Indies recall.
