Northern League: Darwen look to tighten grip The Lancashire Evening Telegraph - 23 July 1999 Undefeated Darwen will be looking to strengthen their lead at the top of the table when they travel to lowly Leyland on Saturday. The Birch Hall side are currently 14 points clear at the top of the Northern League. Paul Rodden returns to the side after holiday and will replace Neil Cordingley who is unavailable due to his own holiday commitments. Third placed Chorley take on second placed St Annes at Windsor Park tomorrow. With just four points separating the teams, it is a match which neither side can afford to lose as they seek to make inroads into leaders Darwen's 14 points cushion at the top. Veteran leg spinner Keith Eccleshare misses the next two matches because of a family holiday and his place will be taken by his young understudy John Greaves who picked up two wickets in a highly encouraging first team debut in last week's cup success over Lancaster.
