Scottish cricket: SCU let Goddard off with warning The Electronic Telegraph - 15 July 1999 Heriot's batsman Chris Goddard, who spat at a Ferguslie opponent during a Scottish National League match at Goldenacre last month, has escaped with a ticking-off from the Scottish Cricket Union after apologising for his actions and offering to coach his club's youth section. Goddard, a Glasgow University student, was instantly banned for five matches by Herior's after the incident while Ferguslie protested to the SCU However, the punshment by Heriot's was deemed sufficient by the SCU's Disciplinary Committee, who decided to take no furthern action other than to warn Goddard about his future conduct. A statement issued by the SCU said: ``We have had a profuse apology from the player in which he agreed that his actions - even if provoked - were quite unacceptable. ``After considerable deliberation, it has been decided that no penalty, additional to the five-match ban already being served, would be imposed. The player has been severely censured and warned as to his future conduct.'' Members of the committee, who praised Heriot's for their swift action, also heard that Goddard has volunteered to coach Heriot's youth section. The level of media coverage the case attracted is believed to have influenced the committee's lenient approach.
