Sri Lanka cricket news in brief The Daily News - 17 July 1999 DWCA women's cricket The all-island womens 20-over knockout leather ball cricket tournament conducted by Colombo District Women's Cricket Association and sponsored by Slimline Pvt. Ltd. will get under way on Sunday at Peterson Playgrounds, Wellawatte. The chief guest at the opening ceremony will be Mayor of Colombo, Alhaj Omar Kamil. The tournament will be played over three days including July 24 and 25 at Nomads Cricket Club. All Sri Lanka leatherball playing clubs will be seen in action such as Slimline Sports Club, Police Sports Club, Young Ladies SC, Colts CC, Moratuwa SC, Lanka Ladies SC, and Colombo Ladies SC. The champions and runners-up will receive cash awards, gift packs from Nestle Lanka Ltd. The best batswoman, best bowler, best fielder and woman of the match of the finals will also receive special awards. All players will receive certificates of participation. For the first time in Sri Lanka, women cricket umpires who have sat for the umpiring examination conducted by BCCSL will officiate.
Colombo North victorious Colombo North beat Galle Region by six wickets in their BCCSL Inter Regional cricket tournament semifinal match played at the SSC grounds, Maitland Place recently. Galle Region: 217 in 49.5 overs (N. Nanayakkara 55, C. Sanjeewa 28, P. Nalaka 25, C. Perera 19, A. Junaid 4 for 46, M. Pushpakumara 3 for 34) Colombo North: 218 for 4 in 49.2 overs (L. Fernando 50, T. Kandambi 50, M. Gajanayake 54 n.o, M. Pushpakumara 13 n.o).
Hilton-Trans Asia clash on July 24 The Cricketing Derby of the Five Star Hotels in Sri Lanka will take place on Saturday 24th July when Hilton Colombo play hosts to their arch rivals Trans Asia at the BRC grounds commencing at 9.00 a.m. Hilton Colombo and Trans Asia (formally Ramada Renaissance) will meet each other for the 10th time with the host team having fared better than its opponents during this period.
