Sri Lanka: Four clubs out of 'Sara' cricket
The Daily News - 28 July 1999

The interim committee of the Board of Control for Cricket in Sri Lanka has decided to uphold the recommendation of the tournament committee to revoke the promotion granted to five clubs following protests of bias lodged by many member clubs.

As a result of this decision Ragama SC, Dimbula CC, Chilaw Marians SC, Weera SC and Malay CC will not play in the Sara trophy tournament in the 1999-2000 season on the grounds that there was no justifiable basis.

Instead, the tournament committee will conduct a qualifying tournament in 1999-2000 at division II level for 16 clubs including those mentioned excepting Dimbula, since the club was not even a participant in the division II tournament in 1998-99.

The first eight teams from this qualifying tournament will be promoted to the Sara tournament for the 2000-2001 season, states a Cricket Board press release.

The Cricket Board has also appointed the following sub-committees in a honorary capacity to advice them on relevant matters:

Infrastructure Development (Colombo/Outstation) Advisory Panel: Dr. Michael Joachim (chairman), Ashley de Vos, Vasantha Ratnayake, Ranil Abeynaike (co-opted to this committee).

Insurance Advisory Panel: C.T.A. Schaffter (chairman), Darrel de Zilwa, S. Siyasena.

National Cricket Development Committee: Ranjit Fernando, Ranjan Madugalle, Jayantha Seneviratne, Bandula Warnapura, Chandra Schaffter, Mano Ponniah, Malcolm Perera, Norton Frederick, Lalith Wijeratne (to co-ordinate the deployment of regional funds and their administration in consultation with the Board's Finance Manager).
