Ashantha, Amal - match referees for Youth Asia Cup
The Daily News - 6 July 1999

The interim commitee of the Board of Control for Cricket in Sri Lanka has appointed former Test cricketers Ashantha de Mel and Amal Silva to officiate as match referees for the Youth Asia Cup which began in Singapore yesterday and will continue till July 11.

They have also named former first-class cricketers, Asoka de Silva, Gamini Silva, Lalith Jayasundera and T. H. Wijewardene as umpires for the tournament.

The countries participating are Bangladesh, Hong Kong, Malaysia and UAE from Group 'A', Papua New Guinea, Singapore, Thailand, and Nepal from Group 'B'. Matches will be played on turf and astro turf pitches.

A press release from the Cricket Board states the Youth Asia Cup is a preliminary qualifier for the Youth World Cup to be hosted by Sri Lanka in the year 2000.

This is a further commitment of the BCCSL's strategy to raise the standards of cricket in Asia. The ACC and the BCCSL are closely associated with this blue print for cricket, the release stated.
